Abstract
Background: Corticosteroids are widely prescribed medications because of their potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties and are commonly used to treat a broad range of pediatric inflammatory conditions. Despite their therapeutic benefits, misuse, misconceptions, and reliance on non-medical information sources have contributed to poor public awareness, corticophobia, and reduced adherence to prescribed treatment. Previous studies in Saudi Arabia have reported inadequate awareness regarding corticosteroid use and its adverse effects. Therefore, this study aimed to assess public awareness regarding the side effects of corticosteroids used in the treatment of pediatric inflammatory diseases.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, between January 15 and December 25, 2025. In this study, 401 adults aged ≥18 years who met the inclusion criteria and consented to participate were included. Data were collected from the participants using a structured online questionnaire distributed from March 13 to June 9, 2025. The questionnaire assessed sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge, awareness, and practices related to corticosteroid use.
Results: Most participants (297; 74.1%) demonstrated poor knowledge regarding the use, indications, and side effects of corticosteroids in treating pediatric inflammatory diseases, whereas 104 (25.9%) demonstrated good knowledge.
Conclusions: The general population in the Makkah region has limited awareness of pediatric corticosteroid use and its potential side effects, highlighting the need for targeted health education and counseling to promote safe use and reduce complications.
Keywords: Awareness, corticosteroids, Makkah, pediatrics, side effects.
